A mobile terminal and a method for controlling the same are provided to display characters having different kinds of facial expression or different appearances according to conditions of the mobile terminal, thereby allowing a user to recognize the conditions of the mobile terminal easily through the displayed characters. A user selects one character group among several character groups stored in a memory, and displays the selected character group on a display unit. The character group is data of characters having various appearances, which are respectively displayed according to variation of condition of a mobile terminal. If a sensing unit senses that the mobile terminal is to be electrically discharged soon due to consumption of battery power, a control unit displays a character for representing that the mobile terminal is in need of electric charging. If the sensing unit senses that a battery of the mobile terminal is completely charged, the control unit displays another character for representing that the battery of the mobile terminal is completely charged.
