PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a monitoring system and an imaging apparatus capable of clearly imaging an imaging object within an imaging area regardless of an imaging environment. SOLUTION: The monitoring system is provided with: a monitoring unit installed on the spot where there is a monitoring object, for acquiring prescribed spot information relating to the monitoring object; and a managing unit installed in a place away from the spot, for acquiring the spot information from the monitoring object. Also, the monitoring unit is provided with the imaging apparatus installed in the direction of a prescribed imaging area including the monitoring object for imaging the imaging object within the imaging area. Also, the imaging apparatus is provided with an imaging device, an amplification part and an A/D conversion part. In this case, a light quantity for recognizing the imaging area in an output image is called the light quantity (a) of the imaging area. At the time, the amplification part is provided with first gain characteristics A stipulated with the light quantity (a) of the imaging area as a reference and second gain characteristics B stipulated with a light quantity (b) less than the light quantity (a) of the imaging area as a reference.
