PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin-film magnetic head capable of appropriately achieving a high recording density by especially reducing a magnetic track width (Mg-Tw) and a PW50 (half-value width of a reproduced waveform), and to provide its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: The upper surface 28a of a protective layer 28 is formed into a curved shape, and a space L1 between both side edges 27c1 of the upper surface 27c of a free magnetic layer 27 in a track direction and the bottom surface of an upper shield layer 32 is set smaller than a space L2 between the center 27c2 of the upper surface 27c of the free magnetic layer 27 and the bottom surface of the upper shield layer 32. Thus, a magnetic track width (Mg-Tw) and a PW 50 (half-value width of reproduced waveform) are narrowed to appropriately achieve a high recording density. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
