PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an increase of the length of a powertrain, while providing a mechanical backward traveling power transmission passage in the powertrain of a hybrid electric automobile. SOLUTION: This powertrain is provided with an engine 10, a motor 80, a generator 34, a battery 90, a power dividing gear train 16 in which a first element 22 is drivably connected to the engine 10 and a second element 20 is drivably connected to the generator 34, a torque reversal gear train 44 in which a first element 102 is drivably connected to a third element 18 of the power dividing gear train 16, a final speed reduction transmission gear 74 drivably connected to a second element 96 of the torque reversal gear train 44 and the motor 80, and a forward and backward traveling connecting clutch 54 for mutually and selectively connecting the two elements of the torque reversal gear train 44 in forward traveling driving and selectively connecting the third element 18 of the torque reversal gear train 44 to the ground 66 in backward traveling driving.
