A turbine generator comprises plural spaced apart parallel discs 8 carried by, and rotationally fast with, a shaft 10 that is connected to and rotates a power generator 3. The circular surface of each disc 8 has recesses, dimples (fig 6, 26) grooves (fig 7, 27) vanes (fig 8, 28) or projections or other topography formed therein to increase its surface area. Recesses or dimples can be in a uniform pattern of concentric rings, and vanes can be uniformly spaced and extend radially over half the disc diameter. Discs 8 can be formed integrally with the shaft 10 or separately with spacers 9. The generator can also include buoyancy members 16,17 to float the discs at a preset immersion, an anchor that allows vertical movement in a flow of fluid such as a marine tide, and an upstream narrowing pipe (fig 10) to increase the flow of water as it approaches the discs. The turbine generator can include a system to remove debris from between the discs 8 comprising nozzles directing pumped fluid toward the discs (fig 4) or arms between adjacent discs (fig 5). A submerged downstream plate 6, parallel to the shaft 10 and circumferentially around the discs 8, can control their rotation speed. |
