A sensory pigment has a chemically reactive (bio)organic or inorganic polymer layer (3) applied on particles (1) containing metal or metal-oxygen compound. The particles (1) are platelet or fibre-shaped particles with a length of more than 300 nm. The thickness of the polymer layer is 5-500 nm. A layer of chromophore particles (4) e.g. nanoparticles, with size of 1-100 nm is applied on the polymer layer. The pigment is mixed or adhered with an adhesive agent (5). The particles (1) have a color visible to human eye or measurable in infrared wavelength, and the color of the particles is changed after chemical reaction with the polymer layer. An independent claim is also included for a method for producing a sensory pigment.
