<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form a faithfully reproduced image of an imaging object while reducing a data amount of spectral reflectance. <P>SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus calculates spectral reflectance of 31 units in a pixel unit making a wavelength spacing as 10 nm after assuming a virtual light source, and expresses these by a spectral reflectance estimate function of the spectral reflectance by linear combination of six characteristic vectors. Spectral energy distribution of the virtual light source has distribution characteristics which compensate that contribution of stimulus values X, Y, Z to a low wavelength region and a high wavelength region is small. Concretely, spectral energy is small in 430 to 660 nm middle wavelength band, and spectral energy is large in 400 to 430 nm low wavelength band and 660 to 700 nm high wavelength band in a visual light region.
