In order to produce a multilevel converter (1) having converter modules (2) which have a plurality of power semiconductors, and having a plurality of energy stores (3), which converter (1) is of simplified design and is compact, it is proposed that at least one converter module (2) be mounted on an energy store (3) such that it is load-bearing.
