This invention relates to pharmaceutical compositions of members of the TGF superfamily, and especially to compositions comprising members of the mammalian TGFß superfamily, in which the composition comprises a substantially purified TGFß, a zwitterion, and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. The zwitterion may be selected from the group consisting of an amino acid, a zwitterionic buffer compound, a zwitterionic detergent compound and an alkaloid. In some embodiments the invention relates to a composition comprising TGFß, which is stable at pH 2.0 to 7.0 for at least 6 months at a temperature between 4° and 27°C.
