PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for depositing a soluble material, such as an organic polymer, onto a substrate using an ink-jet print head. SOLUTION: The substrate is provided with an array of alignment marks. Then the material in solution is deposited when it is substantially aligned with one of the alignment marks to provide an alignment dot of the material in solution. By illuminating a surface of the substrate so as to be observed the alignment dot as an image of a clear field of view, observation of a position of the alignment dot can be easily carried out.
