The drive belt tensioning system for vehicles comprises a roller (108) mounted on a swiveling arm (110) so that it can be moved to a tensioning position, where it touches the belt. The tensioning force vector (b) linking the pivots (112, 114) at either end of the arm is smaller than the maximum vector (a) produced by swiveling the roller to the contact position. Independent claims are included for two separate methods for tensioning a drive belt.
