A mobile communication terminal and a method for operating a transaction timer in the mobile communication terminal are provided to prevent the setting time of the transaction timer from being terminated due to network troubles when a response message corresponding to an IMPS request message is divided into plural parts and the plural parts are received, thereby reducing the retransmission of the IMPS request message. A method for operating a transaction timer in the mobile communication terminal comprises the following steps of: dividing an IMPS(Instant Messaging Presence Services) request message, transmitting the IMPS request message to an IMPS server, and operating a timer at the same time(S320); and resetting the timer to restart counting if receiving a response message corresponding to the IMPS request message divided from the IMPS server within the termination time of the timer(S360,S370).
