PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of attaining a defect-free beautiful appearance of defect-free such as a double truck pattern, a melange pattern, a roll pattern on a strip steel by continuously coating the continuous traveling strip steel in horizontal path with a low viscosity coating material to have a thick film using a multistage natural roll coater having a grooved applicator roll. SOLUTION: In the continuous coating of the upper surface and/or the under surface of the strip steel using the multistage natural roll coater having the grooved applicator roll to apply the low viscosity coating material thick on the upper surface and/or the under surface of the strip steel continuously traveling in horizontal path, a coating material retaining part (liquid retaining part) is formed in a nip part between the applicator roll and the steel and the beautiful appearance is attained by controlling the height of the liquid retaining part to a proper range and the linear pressure between the applicator roll and the strip steel to equal to or above a prescribed value and equal to or below a prescribed value.
