<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element that suppresses a difference in the transmittance between an OFF display region and a background region during high-duty driving. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element 1 comprises: a liquid crystal cell 2 that has a liquid crystal layer comprising a liquid crystal having negative dielectric anisotropy and held between a pair of substrates the surfaces of which are subjected to vertical alignment treatment; and a pair of polarizing plates 3, 4 that interpose the liquid crystal cell 2 and are disposed in a crossed Nicole arrangement. A layer structure 5 showing a retardation value of larger than 0 nm and not more than 60 nm is formed between at least one of the polarizing plates 3, 4 and the liquid crystal cell 2. An OFF voltage is determined to control the OFF transmittance to be equal to the transmittance of the background during time-shared driving of the liquid crystal display element 1. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
