PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and method for assisting a relay service in a wireless communication system employing multi-hop relay. SOLUTION: A method for operating an upper node in the wireless communication system employing relay includes a step for setting transmission/reception mode switching region information of a relay station, a step for transmitting a signal to a terminal located in a service region in a first section of a downlink subframe by using resource allocation information, and a step for transmitting mode switching region information and a signal in a second section of the downlink subframe.
