PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet material supply device for automatically resolving double feed when occurring. SOLUTION: The sheet material supply device comprises a pickup roller 2 for delivering sheet materials onto a hopper 1, a separating roller 3 for carrying the sheet materials delivered by the pickup roller 2 in the feeding direction, a retarding roller 4 certainly pressed against the separating roller 3 at its lower side with idling load for giving sorting effects to the sheet materials, a needle member arranged on the upper side near a nip position between the separating roller 3 and the retarding roller 4 for preventing the backward movement of the sheet materials, a double feed detecting sensor 6 for detecting the double feed of the sheet materials, and a control means 100 for stopping and holding the separating roller 3 when the double feed detecting sensor 6 detects the double feed, and for reversing the retarding roller 4.
