A photographing apparatus and an object tracking and controlling method thereof are provided to compare the tracking objects and backgrounds of a current frame and a previous frame and generate a differential image, thereby extracing a tracking object correctly. A tracking object extraction unit(140) extracts information about a tracking object existing in a current frame on the basis of information about a difference between a pixel value out of previous pixels constituting the tracking object of a previous frame in the adjoining region of current pixels constituting the current frame and the pixel value of the current pixels. A tracking control unit(160) controls automatic tracking for the tracking object on the basis of the information about the tracking object. A movement detection unit(130) detects the movement of a tracking object by using an image down-scaled at a photographing unit(110). A photographing control unit(170) controls a photographing operation of the photographing unit based on the tracking control information outputted from the tracking control unit.
