<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method for processing a card-shaped recording medium preventing write errors and reducing the apparatus in size, while eliminating the necessity of an optical sensor, etc. <P>SOLUTION: The apparatus has a running path; a write head 6 facing the running path and executing a predetermined writing process on the card-shaped recording medium; a read head 5 facing the running path away from the write head 6 and reproducing signals of magnetic data; a write pulse generation means (write pulse detection head) opposed to the write head 6 across the running path and generating write pulses for use in adjusting the timing that the write head 6 executes the writing process; and a control means (CPU 101) for detecting the write pulses and the signals reproduced by the read head 5 and for controlling the write head 6 according to the write pulses.
