In a typewriter, tabulating or like machine wherein continuous 'stationery is fed over a platen so that it is either out of contact or in only light contact therewith means are provided to control the feed of the transfer. webs to permit the feed of a small increment irrespective of the amount the stationery is fed. Record sheets a, Fig. 1, are fed over a platen 1 by a positive feed on the infeed and outfeed sides as described in Specification 757,302. The platen 1 is rotated for line spacing by a constantly reciprocating arm 11 which engages a hook member 15 when a solenoid 13 is energized to attract an arm 14 and acts through rods 2, 3, side plates 4, 5, a pawl 8, and a ratchet wheel 9, to turn a spindle 10. A bell-crank lever 30 is at the same time rotated by a lug 32 on the rod 3 and through a Bowden wire 29, detachably connected to it, acts through a pawl 22 and a ratchet wheel 20 and other linkage to rotate a spindle 16 on which is the transfer web b. Thus, for each line spacing, the transfer web is fed a small increment preferably less than the depth of the type so that the whole web is usefully used. Alternatively, the feed of the spindle 16 may be controlled directly by the action of the printing unit or by other parts which are actuated each time the record webs are imprinted or fed. A modified means of feeding the transfer web comprises a solenoid 33, Fig. 4, which when energized acts through an armature 35, lever 36 and pin and slot connections 39 and 41 to activate a similar pawl and ratchet mechanism 20a, 22a in the transfer web feed. The solenoid 33 may be energized at the same time as the solenoid 13 or directly from the other means, mentioned above, for controlling the transfer web feed.
