Disclosed are neuromodulatory oligomers of the amyloid-beta (1-42) protein, a specific method of preparation by which the oligomers are obtained in a reproducible manner at high yield and the use of the oligomers as diagnostic and therapeutic agents for the generation of oligomer-specific antibodies and for finding substances that interact with the oligomers.
