A rock drilling apparatus with several actuator units (2a to 4b), a user interface control unit (6), and at least one control means (7 to 9) connecte d to the user in- terface control unit (6) for controlling the functions of the rock drilling apparatus (1), and for each actuator unit (2a to 4b), a co ntrol element connected under the control of the user interface control unit (6) for controlling the operation of the actuator unit (2a to 4b) in accord ance with control signals provided by the user interface control unit (6), a nd a method for controlling the rock drilling apparatus. When the control el ement of an actuator unit (2a to 4b) of the rock drilling apparatus turns fa ulty, the control element of another actuator unit (2a to 4b) is connected t o control the first actuator unit (2a to 4b) when the other actuator unit (2 a to 4b) need not be controlled.
