PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vertical axis type door closer which prevents a bevel gear on the operation side from separating from a bevel gear of a head of an adjustment lever, and which can always maintain stable engagement conditions between both of the bevel gears even when a force, which separates mutually between the bevel gear of the head of the adjustment lever and the bevel gear on the operation side, is exerted. SOLUTION: A height-adjustment part of a valve pin is provided to the top end of the body 1 of the vertical axis type door closer, and the height-adjustment part is provided with an operation shaft 19 which is arranged in the radial direction of a serration shaft 11 so that it straddles the concavity 18 of the top end of the serration shaft 11. Both ends of the operation shaft 19 are supported by the serration shaft 11 with possible rotation. Then the operation shaft 19 is provided with a bevel gear 20 which is engaged with a valve head, and which is engaged with the top end tooth part 17a of the bevel gear 17 of which the axle 17b is inserted with flexible rotation into the center hole of the serration shaft 11 so that the top end tooth part 17a is exposed on the bottom of the concavity 18. Then the concavity 18 of the top end of the serration shaft 11 is shaped like a square cylinder, and the back of the bevel gear 20 is directly brought into surface contact with the inner surface of the concavity 18 of the top end.
