PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a xanthone compound having a semaphorin inhibitory activity and to obtain its intermediate. SOLUTION: The method for producing a xanthone compound comprises a process for subjecting a compound represented by formula (1) [R<SP>1</SP>is a hydrogen atom or a group represented by formula (2) (R<SP>4</SP>is a substituted or nonsubstituted 1-6C alkyl group or the like); R<SP>2</SP>and R<SP>3</SP>are each the same or different and a substituted or nonsubstituted 1-6C alkoxy group or the like] to two molecule condensation to give a compound represented by formula (4).
