Water-soluble sulphonated aromatic polymers are prepared by treating a non-cross-linked aromatic polymer, e.g. polystyrene, polymers of substituted styrenes and acenaphthylene, in solution in an aliphatic halogenated ether with chlorosulphonic acid. Ethers such as 2 : 21-di chlorodiethyl, 2 : 21-dichlorodi-n-propyl, 2 : 21-dichlorodi-isopropyl, 2 : 2 - dichlorodiethyl, 1-chlorodiethyl and 2-chlorodiethyl ethers are mentioned and the reaction may be carried out at from 20 DEG to 50 DEG C., preferably 30 DEG C. The reaction mixture is treated with alcohol, e.g. ethyl alcohol, and the sulphonated polymer precipitated by ethylene dichloride, the process being repeated for further purification.
