摘要 <p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To widely design or adjust control of a light chirp quantity. <P>SOLUTION: The optical waveguide element includes: two phase shift waveguides formed near the surface of an optical substrate; a branch waveguide connected to an input side of the two phase shift waveguides; and a merging waveguide connected to an output side of the two phase shift waveguides. The element is formed near the phase shift waveguide, and includes an electrode pair for applying an electric field to the phase shift waveguide, for varying an optical refractive index in at least the phase shift waveguide. In particular, the element unequalizes a merging ratio of optical energy in the branch waveguide or a merging ratio in the merging waveguide when absolute values of respective refractive indexes in the two phase shift waveguide are not coincident with each other.
