PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a load bearing material, improving the strength of a steel pipe bearing compressive force in the longitudinal direction due to external force. SOLUTION: This load bearing material includes: the steel pipe 2; and a steel bar 3 disposed in the steel pipe 2 to apply tensile force in the longitudinal direction of the steel pipe 2. Paired bearing plates 4, 4 are provided at spaces in the longitudinal direction on the steel pipe 2, and the steel bar 3 has elastic restoring force for expanding the space between the bearing plates 4, 4, so that tensile force can be applied in the longitudinal direction of the steel pipe 2 by the elastic restoring force for expanding the space between the bearing plates 4, 4. Accordingly, when the compressive force in the longitudinal direction is applied to the steel pipe 2 by bending moment, the tensile force of the steel bar 3 resists against the compressive force to obtain load bearing material 1 having strong against the load.
