SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR PERFORMING PERIODIC RANGING IN SLEEP MODE IN A COMMUNICATION SYSTEM

A system and a method for performing periodical ranging in a sleep mode of a communication system are provided to perform the periodical ranging in the sleep mode even in consideration of an abnormal state of a mobile station or a base station, thereby performing the reliable periodical ranging and accordingly improving entire performance of the communication system. In a method where a mobile station(400) performs periodical ranging in a sleep mode of a communication system, the method comprises the following steps of: transferring the sleep mode into an awake mode to perform the periodical ranging with a base station(490)(405); checking whether the periodical ranging is failed in the awake mode; and if so, determining that a state of communication with the base station is abnormal.
