An apparatus and a method for driving an LCD device are provided to reduce the preliminary charging time of a pixel by overlapping a gate pulse supplied to adjacent gate lines under half of a first horizontal section, thereby improving the charging characteristic of the pixel. An apparatus for driving an LCD device comprises an image display unit, a gate driver, a data driver, and a timing controller. The image display unit has a liquid crystal cell formed in an area defined by plural data lines and plural gate lines(GLi,GLi+1). The gate driver supplies an overlapped gate pulse to adjacent gate lines. The data driver supplies a data voltage to the data line by being synchronized with the gate pulse. The timing controller adjusts the overlapped section of the gate pulse supplied to the adjacent gate lines.
