A machine for internal cutting operations on a workpiece comprises a boring bar which has a radially movable tool-holder and is detachably secured to the end of a spindle and means including a setting bar extending from inside the spindle through the bar to the tool-holder for setting and locking the tool-holder. The main spindle 2, Fig. 1, is rotatable and axially adjustable in the vertically adjustable spindle head 1. An outer milling spindle 3 surrounds the spindle 2. A screwed connection 9 is provided on the outer end of the spindle 2 to take an auxiliary boring bar 45, Fig. 2. The latter is provided with a radially adjustable tool-holder 53 moved and clamped by a spiral gear 50 secured to a control rod 19. This rod has a connection 20, 201 with a similar rod 19 passing axially through the main spindle to the rear end thereof. The control rod 19 may be rotated by hand or, by power for continuous feed or for cutting tapers and the rod may be moved a limited amount axially to clamp the tool-holder during cutting. Rotational movement by hand is effected from a hand wheel 32, Fig. 1, through gearing 30, 31, shaft 27 and gears 25, 24, 171, 17 provided in a casing 29 secured to move axially with the main spindle 2. Toothed wheel 25 is engaged by moving a clutch 28 to the right. If the clutch is moved to the left, gears 26, 241, 181, 18 are rotated and the gear 18 has a screwed connection with the rod 19 so that the latter either clamps or unclamps the toolholder 53. Power-feed is obtained from the spindle 2 through gears 16, 40, 43,a variable speed drive 39 and thus to shaft 27 through the gear 38. In a modification the clamping may be effected by a hand wheel in screw-thread connection with the inner end of the rod 19 and in a further modification the clamping is effected by a pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder and piston device.
