Data on a mobile device such a mobile phone is backed up on a backup system. Periodically a check is made to determine whether the device has been lost or stolen 102. If it has, a determination is made as to whether any non-backed up data is present on the mobile device, i.e. data that has not yet been stored on the backup system 103. If non-backed up data is present then an encryption key 104 based on backed up data is used to encrypt the non-backed up data 106. The backed up data and the encryption key are then deleted from the mobile device 107, 108. Once the mobile device is recovered, the encryption key can be regenerated from the data stored on the backup system and the non-backed up data recovered from the device. The encryption key may either be generated by the mobile device or it may be generated by the backup system and stored within the device. Gait analysis of the person carrying the device may be performed to determine whether the device is lost or stolen. |
