The device has an updating section for updating a learned value based upon a catalyst bed temperature under temperature increase control of a temperature increase control section and the target bed temperature. A learned value determining section determines whether the learned value is outside of a proper range when the value is updated. An abnormality determining section determines that an abnormality is present when the value determining section determines that the value falls outside of the proper range over several successive updates of the value. An independent claim is also included for an abnormality diagnosing method for an internal combustion engine.
