PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive forsterite substrate which satisfies the peeling test of the marks formed on the substrate by laser irradiation and has a clear contrast with the substrate surface to be easily discriminable and high reliability of the airtightness. SOLUTION: The raw material composition of the forsterite contains a calcined mixture of magnesia and silica in a molar ratio of 2:1, a sintering aid and an inorganic colorant turning black on sintering. The forsterite substrate is obtained by adding water, a binder and a plasticizer to the raw material composition, pulverizing the mixture to obtain slurry, drying and granulating the slurry to obtain granules and pressure-molding and sintering the granules. The sintering aid contained in the raw material composition of the forsterite comprises calcia, alumina and barium oxide. The barium oxide content is 5-30 wt.%. The inorganic colorant is one species element of manganese oxide and contained in an amount of 3-20 wt.%. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
