PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing surface-coated hexaboride particles having improved water resistance. SOLUTION: The method for producing surface-coated hexaboride particles where a coating layer of silica is formed on the surface of each hexaboride particle using a hydrolyzable silane compound comprises: a first stage where an organometallic compound having a dispersion function of hexaboride particles and a polymerization promotion function of a hydrolyzable silane compound are added to the dispersion liquid of particles obtained by dispersing hexaboride particles into an organic solvent, and stirring and mixing are performed, so as to adsorb the organometallic compound on the surface of each particle; a second stage where water and a hydrolyzable silane compound are added to the dispersion liquid of the hexaboride particles on which the organometallic compound is adsorbed, and stirring and mixing are performed, so as to coat the surface of each hexaboride particle on which the organometallic compound is adsorbed with the hydrolyzable silane compound; and a third stage where the solvent is removed from the dispersion liquid of the hexaboride particles each coated with the silane compound, thereafter, the hexaboride particles are heated and fired at the thermal decomposition temperature of the organometallic compound or above, and further, the obtained powdery body is pulverized.
