A method for optimizing the feeding of the newborn babies with very small body mass comprises controlling the assimilation of the nutrients based on the data on blood urea content followed by the correction of feeding ration. The body mass is assessed daily and, the individual growth curve is plotted. On a weekly basis, the consumption of nutrient is calculated taking into account enteral and parenteral protein intake. Blood urea content is measured in the 2d, 4th, and 6th weeks of the postnatal life. Based on the data obtained, the feeding ration is corrected. In particular, the breast milk is substituted partially by the special milk formula providing for the recommended nutrient requirements.
