PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition having a high upper-limit temperature and a low lower-limit temperature for the nematic phase, large an optical anisotropy and a dielectric anisotropy, high specific resistance, small viscosity and high stability to UV rays and heat and a liquid crystal display element using the composition. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition typically consists of a first ingredient comprising a biphenyl ingredient substituted with a fluorine at position 4 and with alkenyl group at position 4', a second ingredient selected from compounds consisting of 3,4,5-trifluorophenyl and 2,6-difluorobiphenyl linked through -CF<SB>2</SB>O- and 3,4,5-triphenyl-terphenyl compounds and a third ingredient selected from 3,4,5-trifluorobiphenylcyclohexane compounds and 3,4,5-trifluorobiphenyldicyclohexane compounds, and has a nematic phase.
