An example embodiment of the present invention may be directed to a method for transmitting a short message using a voice channel. In the example embodiment, a short message may be composed (S303) using a first short message service (SMS) device (111) for a set of intended recipients. The first SMS device may identify (S305) whether a voice channel exists between the first SMS device and at least one member of the set of intended recipients. The first SMS may then transmit (S311) the short message to the at least one member of the set of intended recipients using the voice channel.
