PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To clean the nozzle of an ink jet head while saving the space easily, and to obtain a high quality printed matter stably by preventing dry-up, clogging of nozzle, and the like. SOLUTION: In a printer where an ink jet head having a piezoelectric element is provided in a single or a plurality of ink passages connected with an ink supply tank, and a sensor for detecting ink pressure and a pump for feeding/sucking ink to/from the ink jet head are provided between the ink supply tank and the ink jet head, nozzle cleaning of the ink jet head is performed at the time of nonprinting by pressing the nozzle surface of the ink jet head against a cleaning member while feeding/sucking ink to/from the pump based on the information from the pressure sensor.
