PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing an image display device which can achieve the steady operation of a substrate without having to use a large-scale high-vacuum chamber, thereby realizing reduction in the production cost. SOLUTION: In this method for manufacturing an image display device; a front substrate 11 and a rear substrate 12 are disposed opposite to each other with a distance therebetween which is larger than the distance between the front substrate and the rear substrate of an image display device, a space between both substrates is operated under pressure-reducing environment, and the outside region of both substrates is operated, under not only pressure higher than the pressure between both the substrates, but also under pressure lower than the atmospheric pressure; and under this condition, the front substrate and the rear substrate are sealed to each other.
