PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wear resistant titanium member having excellent wear resistance and pitting resistance. SOLUTION: A valve spring retainer 12 and a valve lifter 15 each formed of a titanium alloy having an alloy composition comprising, by weight, 0.5 to 1.5% Fe and 0.2 to 0.5% O, and the balance Ti with inevitable impurities are subjected to oxidation treatment, so as to be a surface hardness Hmv (load; 0.1 kg) of 550 to <800. Thereafter, at least a bearing surface 19 with a valve spring 14 and a sliding face 23 with a valve cam 18 are subjected to shot peening, so as to be a surface hardness Hmv (load; 0.1 kg) of 800 to 1,000.
