A gas safety device of an air conditioning system for a vehicle and a control method thereof are provided to protect passengers by controlling movement of refrigerants when refrigerants are leaked from an evaporator. A gas safety device of an air conditioning system for a vehicle comprises a gas sensor(200) and a refrigerant block valve(500,510). The gas sensor is installed in an air inlet(100) connecting an engine room and the room of the vehicle. A control unit(400) is operated in accordance with sensing signal of the gas sensor in any location among lines in an refrigerant inlet or outlet of an evaporator(300) and the refrigerant block valve blocks the movement of the refrigerant.
