摘要 0.005 to 0.5 wt. per cent of a fluorescent compound as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 8 of Specification 1,072,914 is used as an optical brightener for solid polymeric material. Such compounds fall within the general formula <FORM:1072917/C3/1> wherein R1 indicates that the rings may be substituted by one or more of halogen, alkyl, aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy, acyl, acyloxy, hydroxyl, amino, substituted amino, quaternized ammonium, sulpho-, substituted sulphonyl, sulphamyl, substituted sulphamyl, cyano thiocyano, thiol carbamyl, substituted carbamyl, carbamyloxy or nitro and Y and Y1 each represent H, alkyl, aryl or cyano. Specified polymeric materials are polyethylene, polypropylene, ethylene-propylene polyallomers; polyesters, e.g. of ethylene or 1,4-cyclohexylenedimethylene glycol and terephthalic acid or naphthalene dicarboxylic acid; acrylonitrile polymers; polyurethanes; rayon; cellulose esters, e.g. acetate, triacetate or acetate-butyrate; and polyamides. In examples the compounds are incorporated in (1) a titanium dioxide and polyethylene terephthalate concentrate which is incorporated in the melt extrusion of polyester fibres; (2) meltextruded fibres of poly(1,4-cyclohexylenedimethylene terephthalate) containing titanium dioxide; (3) to (4) similar polyester and (5) polyamide fibres in woven fabric form by dyeing procedures; (6) injection moulded polyethylene; (7) melt spun copolyester fibre; (8) red cellulose acetate fibre; (9) sheet cellulose acetatebutyrate plasticized with dioctyl phthalate; (10) a fibre spinning solution of a mixture of poly-N-i-propyl acrylamide and an acrylonitrilevinylidene chloride copolymer; (11) and (12) fibres of cellulose esters, polyacrylonitrile and proprietary elastomeric polyesters and polyurethanes; (13) and (14) ethylene and propylene polymers and polyallomers; and (15) a film and fibre-forming polyester during the polycondensation.ALSO:0.005 to 0.5 wt. of a fluorescent compound as claimed in any of claims 1 to 8 of Specification Serial No. 1,072,914 is used as an optical brightener for solid polymeric material. Specified polymeric materials are polyethylene, polypropylene, ethylene-propylene polyallomers; polyesters e.g. of ethylene or 1,4-cyclohexylenedimethylene glycol and terephthalic acid or naphthalene dicarboxylic acid; acrylonitrile polymers; polyurethanes; rayon; cellulose esters e.g. acetate, triacetate or acetate-butyrate; and polyamides.
