The method involves acoustically detecting sound emission like noises coming from a heat exchanger (1) e.g. coolant cooler, filled with a testing medium e.g. air, until a preset testing pressure is reached. The exchanger has two collecting boxes (15, 16) with flat pipes (4) equipped with an inlet (18) and an outlet (19) for the medium. Solid borne sound sensors (24, 25) are attached at one of the boxes of the exchanger. The medium is introduced into the exchanger via the inlet. Solid borne sound sensors (22, 23) are attached at a side part of the exchanger running between the boxes. An independent claim is also included for a device for verifying the tightness and/or the soldering degree of a heat exchanger.
