PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To highly accurately detect the cetane number of fuel used in a diesel engine or the like. SOLUTION: A cetane number detection device detects any one of peak values of an excitation force, a rate of pressure change dP/dθ(θis a crank angle), derivative value d<SP>2</SP>P/dθ<SP>2</SP>of the rate of pressure change, and a rate of change in calorific value dQ/dθ, as rapid property of combustion based on pressure P in a combustion chamber of the engine or a fuel injection amount (calorific value), and then detects the cetane number (S103), based on each value acquired under a first operating condition (middle and high load) wherein the rapid property of combustion is decreased as the cetane number is increased. When a detection value is a predetermined value or more, the cetane number detection device detects the cetane number (S105), based on each value acquired under a second operating condition (idle and low load) on the basis of correlation data between the cetane number and the rapid property of combustion acquired under a second operating condition wherein the rapid property of combustion is increased as the cetane number is increased.
