A method for forming a free air ball of an insulated wire is provided to restrain an insulating material from remaining on the ball by forming the ball and removing simultaneously the insulating material using low and high voltages applied to a torch. An wire coated with an insulating material is drawn from a lower end portion of a capillary as much as a predetermined length(51). A first voltage is applied to a torch in order to melt the insulating material alone, so that the insulating material is removed from the drawn portion of the wire(52). A second voltage is applied to the torch in order to melt the wire(53). At this time, a free air ball is formed at an end portion of the wire. The insulating material is vaporized by the first voltage.
