The invention relates to a mechanism for lifting and lowering a spare wheel, including a main cable (1) which is joined to the wheel such that the wheel is lifted and lowered using said cable (1), and a reel (2) around which the main cable (1) is wound. The mechanism also includes a handle (3) which is actuated in order to lift or lower the wheel and transmission means (7, 8, 9) which are joined to the reel (2) and which transmit the rotation of the handle (3) to the reel (2) when the handle (3) is joined to the transmission means (7, 8, 9). A transmission shaft (6) rotates solidly with the handle (3) and can move axially such that the transmission shaft (6) is joined to or released from the transmission means (7, 8, 9).
