A transitional railway coupling comprises a hook 1 on which is pivotally mounted a connecting rod 5 carrying conventional screw tightener linkage formed by parts 6-10 which are held in an out of use position on a hook 11, the rod 5 having a hook or notch 12 in which is located a pivot 14 provided at the end of a connecting rod 15 of a removable automatic coupling member 17, the pivot 14 being held in place by an elbow lever 19 pivoted on the rod 5. Two abutments 22, 23 limit the movement of lever 19 in its closed and open positions respectively, and a spring 25 retains the lever in a set position. A lever operating handle 24 may be supplied with a spring loaded bolt 28, Fig. 4 (not shown), which engages the edge 32 of the rod 5 holding the lever 19 in its closed position. When not in use the member 17 may be hooked away on a cross-bar 3. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the connecting rod 15 is replaced by a rod 36 having two pivots 37 and 38 which may alternately engage the notch 12. Again the rod 15 may be made in two pieces which screw into one another thereby adjusting its length. In a further embodiment, Fig. 6, the coupling may be made up so that the member 17 may be automatically coupled by simple approach of two railway wagons. In this case the rod 15 is extended by an elbow 39 to the end of which is pivoted a rod 40 which bears in an open notch 42 formed at the end of a support 43 mounted on hook 1, the assembly 5, 39, 40 and 43 forming an articulated quadrilateral supporting the member 17 in the position for automatic coupling.
