A plasma display device and a control method thereof are provided to reduce flickering of a PDP(Plasma Display Panel) by reducing the number of sustain pulses between the previous and current frames. A plasma display device includes an APL(Average Picture Level) calculator(10), an APL comparator(20), and a sustain number adjusting unit(30). The APL calculator calculates APL values for the previous and current frames. The APL comparator compares the APL values of the current and previous frames. The sustain number adjusting unit calculates a difference between sustain pulses in a part of sub-fields in the current and previous frames based on the comparison result from the APL comparator, and determines the number of sustain pulses for the current frame according to the calculated difference.
