An induction coil for zone-melting is provided with a coarse-grained coating of silver. The coating is anchored to the surface of the coil by heating the coated coil to a dull red heat, or by means of a superimposed fine-grained coating of silver. The coatings are produced by electro-deposition, the first from a silver nitrate solution and the second from a silver cyanide solution. The coarse-grained coating may have a grain size of 5-200 microns and a maximum thickness of 200 microns. The fine-grained coating may have a grain size of less than 10 microns and a maximum thickness of 15 microns. The coil may have a surface of iron, copper, silver, or gold.ALSO:A semi-conductor rod is zone-melted using an induction coil having a coarse-grained coating of silver.
