PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet feeder capable of reliably elevating a sheet stacking plate to an adequate position when the first elevating command of the sheet stacking plate is given after fitting a cassette. SOLUTION: Sheets of the number close to the maximum stacking number are stacked on a sheet stacking plate, and a sheet cassette is fitted to an image forming device body. Even when a sheet surface detection means is turned on immediately after the sheet cassette is fitted, a lifter for elevating the sheet stacking plate is subjected to the preliminary drive.
