PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a placing system which uses a catheter for delivering a stretch resistant embolic device at a predetermined site within a blood vessel. SOLUTION: A medical device for placing an embolic device at the predetermined site within the blood vessel of a human body includes the delivery catheter and a flexible pusher member which is slidably disposed within the lumen of the catheter and has a lumen. The stretch resistant embolic device is retained in the delivery catheter by a mechanical interlocking mechanism including an engagement member which is attached to the distal end of the pusher member and extends through a retaining ring at the proximal end of the embolic device. A detachment member extends through an aperture at the distal end of the engagement member to lock the embolic device onto the pusher member. The engagement member engages the retaining ring of the embolic device. When the embolic device advances to a predetermined site within the blood vessel, the detachment member is withdrawn from the aperture, and the embolic device is released at a treatment site.
